Product Information

From an aesthetics standpoint, integrally colored concrete adds value to residential and commercial property. It beautifies streets, plazas, driveways, sidewalks, entries, walkways and interior surfaces.

Southern Color Company's REDI-COLOR© and REDI-COLOR PLUS© bags are designed for pre-measured addition of pure iron oxide pigments for integrally coloring concrete.

SCC provides ease, accuracy and efficiency in colored concrete through digital color control and factory measured, dissolvable bags.

REDI-COLOR© bags contain pure, high grade iron oxide pigments, specifically processed for coloring concrete and digitally weighed for precise dosing from batch to batch. The entire bag and contents are tossed into the mixing drum of the ready mix truck assuring the exact amount of color is added each time.

REDI-COLOR PLUS© bags are a premium combination of high grade Iron Oxide pigments and set controlling, water reducing admixtures and dispersing aids, packaged in REDI-COLOR© bags for precise dosing.

USES: Ideal for premium applications where admixtures and dispersing aids are preferred to be combined with the pigments.

KEY BENEFITS:
Each bag contains high quality, pure Iron Oxide pigments.
Each bag is individually weighed on digital scales.
Entire bag and contents are tossed into the Ready-Mix truck, eliminating measuring and dusting.
Exact amount of color is added to the truck. No guesswork or color variations due to imprecise measurement of pigments.
No stirring of pails of liquids.
No disposal of empty bags or pails.
REDI-COLOR PLUS© bags are pre-blended with water reducing admixtures and dispersing aids, to improve strength, workability and performance of colored concrete.

Note:Colors shown approximate the shade achieved using Type1-11 cement and the standard amount of pigment per color at a 4" slump. Variations can be expected due to differences in cement color, slump, aggregates, and method of application. Colored concrete should be batched, placed, and cured as directed in the SCC data sheet on recommended procedures for colored concrete.
**JET BLACK is a dispersed carbon black product that can lose color intensity over a period of time and air-entrainment may need to be adjusted.

Application Guide

Ready-Mix Integral Color Addition

Today, ready-mix suppliers make every effort to deliver a quality product to the contractor's project, by insuring consistency of batched materials and consistent slumps when delivered. When selecting mixes to be used for colored concrete, careful consideration of the factors that influence timely delivery and any anticipated placing delays on the job should be taken into account, so that a suitable mix with the proper ingredients can be chosen.

Once the mix has been selected, it should never be changed or adjusted in any way, to maintain color uniformity. This means using the same raw material, sand, stone, and cement. During the batching process at the plant, consistency of mix ingredients is of the utmost importance. When adding the oxide color, it is carefully measured and mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions and mix water is carefully monitored. It is highly recommended that you use a color supplier that pre-batches the color on a per cubic yard process.

From the contractor’s standpoint, the urge to alter the setting time of the concrete should be avoided. Specifically, the use of calcium chloride should be avoided at ah costs, as it will cause areas of dark and light contrasted color, making the concrete appear blotchy. To insure a quality job, regard colored concrete as you would high-strength concrete, giving the material the same respect and concern. This care should be given on all concrete, even footings.

Curing, Staining, and Sealing

Quality architectural concrete adds to the beauty and value of a completed project. There are a variety of special treatments available, and one of these is colored concrete. To enhance the life and aesthetic quality of colored concrete an important finishing technique is proper curing and sealing.

Using a curing / sealing compound in matching color, cures, seals, hardens, and dust-proofs the concrete surface. It will preserve the natural look and protect against stains. It also provides a means to bring a consistent look throughout the project. Clear curing compounds to be applied specifically to colored concrete are also available.

Traditional methods of curing such as ponding, fogging & intermittent wetting and drying, wet coverings such as burlap, plastic sheeting or membrane paper have proven unsatisfactory on colored concrete. Water curing in any form leaches out soluble salts from the concrete which can result in efflorescence and color lightening. Paper and plastic covers tend to leave unsightly fold marks and discoloration and staining on the slab. Plastic covering creates a greenhouse affect on the young concrete

Best results are obtained when a curing compound is used on concrete during the curing process. The curing compound can be applied with a clean airless or pump sprayer. It should be applied after final trowel or broom finish when the surface moisture sheen has disappeared. Be sure to coat the surface uniformly, avoiding puddling or runoff. Proper application should be done in two applications at right angles.

Most products will develop a hard surface within two hours and can take full traffic in 72 hours. Old colored concrete can be rejuvenated with a matching colored sealer. Generally, the same application techniques are used, Special attention should be given as to whether it is an interior or application. The curing compound should also be UV protected and non-yellowing.

This new generation of pigmented acrylic co-polymer emulsions double as membrane forming curing compounds and as penetrating sealers and provide for attractive, permanent, and maintenance free colored concrete.
