REDI-TONE© concrete stain Is an attractively priced stain that forms a chemical reaction with minerals in concrete or other cementitious products. Made of acid solutions, wetting agents and metallic chlorides, the stain, when in contact with cement, forms oxides of rich, varying hues and tones.
Unlike SCC REDI-COLOR SEAL© products, or other coatings, the solution may not appear like the resulting color produced after the chemical reaction. For instance, a red stain appears green in color when first applied to concrete, but results in a warm varigated finish. Because the surface of the concrete is not uniform, the reaction is varied, resulting in random colors and tones. If you desire a monochromatic finish, use SCC REDI-COLOR SEAL© products.
REDI-TONE© stain colors result from a chemical reaction with the minerals in the concrete. Therefore, the stains will not chip, fade, peel or crack, and only wear with the concrete.
USES: REDI-TONE© chemical stains are ideal for creating beautiful, stone-like finishes on ordinary concrete surfaces including flatwork, stamped and textured concrete. They are equally suited for residential interior and exterior spaces and commercial applications including restaurants, retail, hospitality, shopping malls, theaters, theme parks, building entries, patios, sidewalks or other surfaces that can be enhanced with the rich tones of these durable stains. REDI-TONE© stains are an excellent choice for reducing building cost while dramatically improving the total building or hardscape appearance.
CONTAINER SIZE: SCC REDI-TONE© stains are available in one and five gallon DOT approved plastic containers, and stocked in our factory and regional warehouses for quick shipment.
AVAILABILITY: REDI-TONE© stains are available in 10 standard colors and can create a multitude of colors when combined with SCC's REDI-COLOR© integral color for concrete, or concrete that has been colored with SCC REDI-CHROME© color hardeners. REDI-TONE PLUS© concentrate stains are available in 6 standard colors to be diluted for a wide variety of rich, marbleized colors reminiscent of fine imported stone. Call SCC for lead-times and ordering.

PREPARATION: The surface must be clean and free of sealers, oils, or any contaminants that can impede the stain. Clean the surface with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) or detergent, followed by a thorough washing to remove any residue. DO NOT ACID ETCH THE SURFACE! ALL application tools and vessels must be composed of 100% plastic.
Test the stain in an inconspicuous place, allowing 4 hours to cure. Wash the area and view while wet to see if desired color has been achieved. A second application is normally required to achieve best results and to even out the variations of tones. Check for bubbling action to ensure reaction. If not, the surface may be contaminated and stain will not take unless the contaminant is completely removed.
Visually survey the space to determine the pattern of application, based on traffic patterns and how the surface will be viewed. Try to avoid dry laps where wet stain will overlap dried stain. Dry laps will cause visible lines and must be minimized or, if unavoidable, planned for non-visible places.
Realize that the color will develop over a few hours, so try to envision the results while applying the stain, even though it appears a different and lighter color during application.
PLACING: Apply stain with an ALL PLASTIC sprayer, roller, mop, or plastic bristle brush. Test any materials with the stain to be sure it does not react to the acid. A circular or dabbing application by a brush will give a more varied finish while a sprayer will provide a more even application. Be sure that the stain does NOT come in contact with materials not intended to be stained.
Allow the stain to dry for 4 hours, and re-apply if needed. Allow the stain to cure overnight. Do NOT wash the surface between coats.
Vigorously sweep off the residue, properly disposing of it as it may still contain acid compounds. Neutralize the surface with 1/2 cup ammonia diluted in 1 gallon of water. Thoroughly flood the surface with water and wet-vac the surface, repeating until completely clean of any stain residue. The color of the surface when wet will be close to the finished product.
Barricade or protect the surface until it is completely dry. Fans may facilitate quicker drying. Apply two coats of SCC REDI-CLEAR SEAL© products, using published guidelines for best results and a more protected finish. Depending on the surface and traffic, a third coat may be applied for greater protection. Prevent traffic on the surface for 72 hours or until the surface is completely cured.
For a non-skid finish, contact your SCC representative for more information.
CURING: The concrete should be fully cured for 28 days, and a minimum of 14 days.
MAINTENANCE: SCC recommends that the surface be kept broom clean and soil free. The surface should be cleaned with a mild soap or detergent on a regular and repeated basis. In areas with sand or grit, we suggest door mats to prevent abrasive eroding of the surface. The surface can be renewed again with subsequent applications of SCC REDI-CLEAR SEAL© products.
